About Mabamba Swamp

Mabamba Swamp is a renowned wetland located on the northern shores of Lake Victoria, about an hour’s drive from Kampala. It is one of Uganda’s top birding destinations, famous for being one of the best places in East Africa to spot the rare and prehistoric-looking Shoebill. The swamp consists of a network of papyrus channels and lagoons, which are best explored by small motorized canoe, allowing visitors to glide quietly through the vegetation in search of birdlife.

Mabamba is home to over 300 bird species, including papyrus endemics, kingfishers, herons, and egrets, making it a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. The highlight of any visit is the guided canoe excursion led by experienced local bird guides who skillfully navigate the swamp to locate the shoebill in its natural habitat. In addition to birding, the swamp offers a peaceful and scenic experience, showcasing Uganda’s rich biodiversity while supporting local community tourism initiatives.
