About Ziwa Rhino and Wildlife Ranch
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a unique wildlife conservation area located about 3–4 hours north of Kampala along the Kampala–Gulu highway. Established in 2005, the sanctuary was created to reintroduce rhinoceroses into Uganda after they became extinct in the wild due to poaching and civil unrest in the early 1980s. Today, it remains the only place in the country where visitors can see wild rhinos, making it an important stopover for travelers heading to northern destinations like Murchison Falls National Park.
The sanctuary spans approximately 70 square kilometers of savannah, woodland, and wetland habitats, supporting a variety of wildlife including antelopes, monkeys, crocodiles, and numerous bird species. Its main highlight is the guided on-foot rhino tracking experience, where visitors walk alongside trained rangers to observe these endangered animals up close in their natural environment. Beyond tourism, Ziwa plays a vital role in conservation by providing a safe, well-guarded breeding ground, with the long-term goal of reintroducing rhinos back into Uganda’s national parks.
